overview

The Water Jet Propulsion Course is designed to provide officers and technical personnel with a thorough understanding of water jet propulsion systems, their operational characteristics, and their safe and efficient use.
Water jet propulsion is widely employed on high-speed craft, ferries, offshore support vessels, patrol boats, and specialized ships where maneuverability, shallow draft, and high efficiency are critical.
Unlike conventional propeller-driven systems, water jet propulsion introduces unique hydrodynamic behavior, control logic, and operational limitations. This course equips participants with the knowledge required to operate such vessels safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
OUTCOME
Operational confidence at low speed, in emergency manoeuvres, and during berthing/unberthing.

TRAINING STRUCTURE

See how the course turns water jet theory into confident handling and compliant operations

Fundamentals of Water Jet Propulsion

The course begins with the basic principles of water jet propulsion. The course includes:

Intake of water through hull-mounted inlets

Acceleration of water using an impeller and stator system

Thrust generation through a steerable nozzle

Vectoring of thrust for steering and maneuvering

Participants gain a clear understanding of how thrust is produced and how changes in flow rate, nozzle direction, and engine speed affect vessel performance.

Vessel Handling and Maneuvering Characteristics

One of the most critical aspects of water jet propulsion is vessel handling. The course provides in-depth training on:

Low-speed maneuvering and station keeping

Crash stop behavior and stopping distances

Astern movement using reversing buckets

Effects of wind, current, and shallow water

Differences between single-jet and multi-jet configuration

After completion of the theoretical modules, participants will proceed to simulator-based training to practice and enhance the practical use of water jet propulsion systems.

Benefits of the Water Jet Propulsion Course

Improved Vessel Safety

  • Enhances understanding of propulsion response in critical situations
  • Reduces risk of collision or grounding during maneuvering
  • Improves emergency response decision-making

Enhanced Operational Efficiency

  • Optimizes vessel handling and fuel usage
  • Improves berthing and unberthing performance
  • Reduces wear and stress on propulsion components

ncreased Crew Competence and Confidence

  • Builds confidence in handling non-conventional propulsion systems
  • Promotes consistent operating practices across the fleet
  • Reduces dependency on trial-and-error learning
